If so, The Dean of Students Office with Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Military-Affiliated Student Center Director! This position will be classified as an Assistant Director Student Services.
The Military-Affiliated Student Center (MASC) provides academic support, transition assistance, and advocacy for students who are Active-Duty Service Members, Veterans, ROTC cadets, Reservists, National Guard, and their Families. Our center is dedicated to creating a supportive environment that recognizes and values the unique experiences and needs of military-affiliated students.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning & Program Development:
+ Shape the Student Experience: Develop, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive co-curricular plan that supports the leadership, academic, professional, and personal growth of Military-Affiliated Students.
+ Drive Access & Retention: Collaborate with campus partners to design policies and programs that enhance college access and encourage the retention and success of military-affiliated students.
+ Stay Ahead of Trends: Monitor and inform the campus community on trends, legislation, and changes that may impact military-affiliated students, helping to shape effective support strategies.
+ Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with departments within the Dean of Students office to provide holistic support to military-affiliated students across campus.
+ Consult & Advise: Partner with academic colleges and student support programs to share best practices and ensure coordinated, effective strategies for student persistence and retention.
+ Continuous Development: Stay updated on student development and best practices by engaging with professionals in the field and attending industry events.
Supervision & Administration:
+ Team Leadership: Hire, train, and manage both professional and student staff within the Military-Affiliated Student Center to ensure the smooth operation of services and programs.
+ Scholarship & Award Coordination: Oversee military-affiliated scholarships, award programs, and celebratory events, ensuring recognition and support for deserving students.
+ Budget & Compliance: Manage the department’s budget, ensuring compliance with university policies and regulations. Prepare annual budget requests and forecast expenditures for all programs and services.
+ Grant Management: Administer and report on the use of grant funds, ensuring they align with community partner expectations, while identifying new opportunities and writing proposals for funding.
+ Visibility & Fundraising: Enhance the visibility and reputation of the Military-Affiliated Student Center through strategic networking with alumni, community partners, and potential donors. Lead fundraising efforts to support the Center’s mission.
Student Support & Outreach:
+ Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with veteran-serving organizations, resource groups, and committees to benefit military-affiliated students at ISU.
+ Training & Education: Develop and lead training sessions for faculty and staff on best practices for supporting military and veteran students.
+ Personalized Student Support: Provide one-on-one advisement to students, offering guidance on their individual needs and connecting them with university and community resources.
+ Collaborative Care: Work alongside various university departments and community organizations to ensure students receive comprehensive support and referrals when necessary.
This individual will also lead the development and ongoing evaluation of programming and support services, identifying gaps and trends to ensure the continued success and well-being of military-affiliated students. They will play a key role in recruitment, retention, and graduation efforts.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
Level Guidelines- Aware of key annual objectives of department or work unit- Understands linkage between daily activities and achievement of annual objectives of department/work unit and explains to direct reports- Focus on ISU’s mission and meeting department or work unit goals- Supervises a small department or work team- Often is a working supervisor with direct, previous experience performing work of those supervised- Has full management responsibility for direct reports, specifically the authority to hire, fire, and counsel; may share part of responsibility with higher level management- Requests approval for financial actions beyond a limited scope per policy
