Job Description

Location: Ames, Iowa

Shift Requirements: Days, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M., flextime available.

Overtime and/or overnight travel will be required.

As a Program Planner 1 on the Traffic Collection & Analysis Team, you will be a part of a team is directly responsible for planning, scheduling, collecting, processing, and publishing traffic data on Iowa’s transportation systems. Traffic data are collected on field units, downloaded to computers, verified for integrity, analyzed, and summarized for publication in charts and maps.

The most successful candidates for this role will be able to be trained to utilize a variety of applications such as Access, Excel, Word, Esri, and traffic data analysis software such as High Desert Traffic’s Jackalope and Peek’s Data Validator and Data Collector applications; and possess the ability to effectively develop and interpret mapping products, accurately enter and analyze data, and perform mathematic and statistical calculations.

Your daily responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

+ The identification, programming, and implementation of mathematical, procedural, computer programs and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) workflows to increase accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.

+ Participating in traffic data processing operations to ensure that all data scheduling, gathering, and processing are complete and free of errors. This will include coordinating and conducting traffic data collection operations from the office and in the field by maintaining a working knowledge of traffic data collection equipment, assisting in selecting and training competent temporary summer and permanent personnel, and assisting in assigning the workload.

+ Use and support others in the use of Jackalope, a software system for collecting, editing, summarizing, and reporting the DOT’s traffic data for all public roadways in the state of Iowa.

+ Researching, acquiring, and testing new technology to enhance both manual and automated traffic data collection processes to meet state and federal mandates.

+ Conduct traffic data collection operation in the field and assist in training and coordinating traffic collection efforts of temporary summer staff. This position will also be required to maintain a strong working knowledge of all traffic data collection equipment and train the temporary summer staff in the use of this equipment. The responsibilities of this position require proficiencies with mathematics and computers as well as strong communication skills in a team-based environment.

Special Requirements: You must have the ability to lift and carry 20 pounds over rural right of way terrain. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree;

OR

A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where one year of full-time experience in the administration or operation/execution (i.e., providing consultation and/or technical assistance to stakeholders, research and analysis, or enforcement of program guidelines/policies/procedures) of a program (i.e., the provision of a service or an administrative oversight/enforcement responsibility) equals thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field.

OR

employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the experience equal to eighteen months of full-time work as a Planning Aide.
