WG Provisions and WG Biomedical were founded in 1979 by Marv Walter, an esteemed alumnus of Iowa State University and a pioneer in the American meat industry. Marv’s legacy includes founding over 30 businesses, serving in leadership roles within the American Meat Institute and the U.S. Meat Export Federation, and receiving accolades such as the 1989 Iowa Small Businessperson of the Year and induction into the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame. His deep commitment to Iowa agriculture extended beyond business—he was a generous philanthropist, supporting 4-H, Alpha Gamma Rho, and Iowa State University’s Hansen Ag Learning Center.
Today, WG Provisions and WG Biomedical thrive under the leadership of Darren Dies, who became president in 1996. Also, an Iowa State University graduate, Darren has played a crucial role in WG’s growth, bringing innovations like the Double-Smoked Brisket, The Perfect Pig™, heat post-pasteurization protocols, and advances in medical livestock tissue. Both Marv and Darren grew up on Iowa farms, were active in 4-H and livestock showing, and studied animal science at Iowa State University—agriculture is deeply embedded in our company’s DNA.
WG Provisions and WG Biomedical are relatively small, family-owned businesses, based in Ames, Iowa. WG Provisions consists of two divisions: the Butchery (Roasting Pigs) in Sidney, IA, the Smokehouse (Fully Cooked Meats) in Jewell, IA. We also market specialty meats, such as rabbit, nationwide. WG Biomedical partners with slaughter facilities across Iowa and the U.S. to harvest livestock tissue for medical purposes.
Collaborations allow us to stay ahead in the industry, ensuring we meet evolving market demands while continuing to support Iowa’s agricultural producers. We actively engage with Iowa’s and the nation’s agricultural organizations, including the Iowa Pork Producers Association, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, the Iowa Farm Bureau, Choose Iowa, Certified Angus Beef, and the North American Meat Institute. These partnerships allow us to advocate for agricultural interests, strengthen our industry connections, and ensure leadership in the meat and biomedical industries. Our collaboration with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is showcased each year at the Iowa State Fair, where our Smokehouse’s shredded beef is featured in the iconic Hot Beef Sundae—a tradition that Darren personally enjoys every year.
WG has a history of stepping up in times of crisis to support agriculture and local communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when major slaughter facilities shut down, we quickly adapted our Smokehouse and Roasting Pig operations to process livestock products that would have otherwise gone to waste. Our Butchery participated in the Pass the Pork initiative, receiving multiple loads of pigs from Iowa farmers to help alleviate processing bottlenecks. This effort not only supported local farmers but also provided food to Iowa food banks, ensuring families in need had access to high-quality protein. Our community support extends beyond agriculture—we have served meals in Sidney after local flooding and partnered with Jewell Fire and Rescue to fundraise for an emergency rescue boat following a tragic accident at Little Wall Lake. Additionally, we hosted a Mother’s Day Hot Beef Sundae Drive-Through to raise funds to reopen the Jewell Market, a vital community grocery store. We regularly donate our WG Meatbox’s to non-profit groups across Iowa.
Since 1979, WG Provisions has been producing quality products with exceptional service, transforming livestock from Iowa and the broader Midwest into premium meat products that serve national and international markets. We are a company founded and led by Iowans with deep ties to farming. We take great pride in our role in the meat and biomedical industries.
