General Information

The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for Furman Aquatic Center Water Safety Instructors for the 2025 Summer Season!

Shift times vary with day and evening hours, weekdays and weekends, April through September.

Water Safety Instructors are directly accountable to the Shift Leaders, Recreation Assistant and Aquatics Manager, and adjunctly accountable to the Recreation Superintendent and the Director of Parks & Recreation.

Examples of Essential Job Functions

Teach water safety skills for various skill levels, as assigned; ensure safety of all participants; enforce all aquatic facility polices, rules and regulations; recognize and respond to any emergency situations; evaluate and record participants skills; inspect equipment before use and report any issues to lesson coordinator; complete and submit required reports of a swim lesson; and participate in scheduled in-service sessions.

Qualifications

Age Requirement:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Experience:

  • Prior experience is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current American Red Cross or YMCA Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate. Equivalent certifications issued by other organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates not possessing these certifications may still apply as a Swim Instructor and can obtain the WSI certification through the City, free of charge.

Please attach your WSI/Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate to your application!

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must possess knowledge of water safety practices.
  • Must possess a strong swimming ability.
  • Thorough knowledge of swimming and water safety, and application of skill.
  • Knowledgeable of child development (obtained during WSI certification).
  • Ability to teach and relate positively to participants.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor (calm and courteous) at all times while on site.
  • Ability to maintain an exceptional level of safety and pool facilities.
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance at all times while on site.
  • Ability to understand, appreciate and embody the City of Ames Core Values.

Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.NOTE: Applicants with disabilities may submit requests for ADA testing or interview accommodations to the Human Resources Department prior to the test or interview.
